The year 2007 saw at least 170,000 children admitted in emergency rooms of US hospitals due to injuries from toys. There was a reminder and alert issued by Safe Kids Worldwide for the current holiday season.
A combined effort to check child accidents due to toys is underway with the teaming up of the toy safety advocates from Justice and Safe Kids Worldwide, through the website www.usa.safekids.org. a member of the Safe Kids Worldwide, Safe Kids USA is based in Washington DC and operates as a non profit organization. According to them, it is important for Americans to be aware of safety hazards related to toys, especially during the holiday season as this is the time kids are prone to more accidents. This warning follows the toy related deaths of 18 children in the year 2007.
At least five list of hazards from toys have been listed by the injury attorneys from Florida West Palm Beach and JusticeNewsFlash.com.
– be extra careful with riding toys and scooters. This warning also includes the bikes, inline skates, skateboards, roller shoes, etc. Injuries normally caused by these include spine injury, breaking of bones and injury to the head.
– Choking can result from small parts of toys, tiny balls, etc.
– Advisable to eliminate balloons that are broken immediately. Children must be kept far away from uninflated balloons as this can cause choking
– Magnets are one of the major causes of choking in children and have to be kept beyond their reach.- Prevent burning of skin by keeping children away from adapters and chargers. Reporters from the toy injury division of JNF wish everyone a happy and safe holiday wherein protection of kids from injuries arising out of unsafe toys should be the top priority.
